LP Pathfinders: top Instagrams from July 2016

With the summer season in full swing in the northern hemisphere, Lonely Planet Pathfinders from all over the globe have been soaking up the rays. The result? This month’s Pathfinder Instagram round up which celebrates the perfect union of water and land coming together and the breathtaking views that compel us to fall deeper in love with our beautiful planet. Here are our selections for July.
Landsort, Sweden
‘This is what my day looked like while in Landsort – at the bottom of the Stockholm archipelago. Such a stunning place to visit!’ – Skye, @skyetravels.
Why we like it: The rainbow hitting the ocean horizon on the left hand side of this shot perfectly frames and balances the lighthouse rising above the horizon on the right. Let’s not forget to mention that this scene is enhanced by the amazing view of the red houses dotting the green landscape in the foreground. Combine the lucky rainbow with the quintessential village and you’ve got yourself an image that gets our attention.
Krka National Park, Croatia
‘I risked a lot for this shot! It’s hard to tell, but I’m actually standing in thigh-high water with my camera just inches from being drowned. Still, I think it pretty much captures what I want it to – let me present to you the beautiful waterfalls at Krka National Park.’ – Macca Sherifi, @backpackermacca.
Why we like it: This is a unique and daring approach to photographing a waterfall and that’s why it stands out so much. Having the lower third of the image filled with the water pool gives us a unique perspective. It makes us feel as though we are in the water too and more in touch with this awesome place.
Norheimsund, Norway
‘Norheimsund is the cutest little town we’ve seen for a long time. We came from the rather rainy Bergen and after a long two hour journey we finally arrived in what I think is one of the most idyllic places I’ve ever been to. We had already seen a glimmer of it from our way up to Steinsdalsfossen and even from a distance, we knew, we had to stop here. It was totally worth it. Why we like it: There is a lot the viewer can enjoy and discover in this image, from the details of the houses to the abstract qualities in the reflections. It makes us move our eyes up and down through the image, matching each house to its reflection while delightfully discovering the various ways the surface of the water changes how the houses appear.
British Columbia, Canada
‘I’m not usually a morning person, but I hauled myself out of bed at 5:30am during a heli-hiking trip to catch this sunrise. The early wakeup call was worth it, as I watched the pink clouds float above the spires of the Bugaboos, casting a perfect reflection in the pond below.’ -Tamara, @globeguide.
Why we like it: Wow – what gorgeous light! This is definitely something you don’t experience by driving up in a tour bus at high noon. There is majestic serenity oozing out of this image and every angle directs our eyes to the center where we get there we see that snow dotted peak. It’s so mesmerizing that our eyes can’t resist taking another look at all of the layers that make this scene so breathtaking.
Bovec, Slovenia
‘The Soča river, with its frigid turquoise waters is not to be missed when travelling in Slovenia. The river is great for embarking on exhilarating water sports and just outside of the town of Bovec it has carved out this beautiful gorge, referred to by the locals as the ‘Grand Canyon of the Soča’. We walked along its rim for a bit, taking in the gorgeous views and the surreal colour of the water. Along the way, it is criss-crossed with bouncy suspension bridges, which we couldn’t resist wandering along.’ – Justin, @justingoesplaces.
Why we like it: The vantage point of this image shows us a beautiful expanse of cool blue and green tones that go from earth to sky and cover everything in between. The turquoise river moves our eyes upward through the center of the frame and onto the green mountain in the distance. A perfectly framed shot.
